Music is a Universal Phenomenon that is found in every society. It’s is a distinct art form that communicate through different media. Music Made and performed by the Chinese people may not be palatable to the Yoruba man of Western Nigeria and this rules out the assertion that music is Universal Language. Language has its own characteristics which include that It must be understood by those who speak or engage in it.
Music is used for different purposes including festivals, religious ceremonies, sporting activities amongst others, hence, it is regarded as one of the most powerful art forms in the Society. Music is used to correct erring Leaders, and fight injustice while also influencing Public good. In the midst of these, Music also has the potential to wrongfully influence the society if used in a way that will promote moral decadence.
The Communicative ability of music is one that has been explored severally and yielded good results. In precolonial Africa, music was used to pass messages to the communities from monarchies example is the Talking Drum of the Yoruba people of western Nigeria. From the colonial era to present day music as served different communicative Roles. Music has been used as a tool for advertising goods and services, political parties for election and make important announcements. Music is used in protest to Influence government action. It has also been used severally as a means of public awareness for societal good especially security, sanitation and Climate consciousness.
